What...Back to School ALREADY...

9928852thlI've just returned from doing a few errands with my daughter and was a bit shocked to see all the BACK TO SCHOOL "stuff" out in stores.  It's not even August for goodness sake.

It's so easy to get swept up in the 'future' and become disengaged from the RIGHT NOW.  If you want to think about your child going back to school then that's fine...in fact I love the new site up by PTO: back2school2007.com.  BUT...do your own organization and planning rather than jazzing your child up about their upcoming classes, responsibilities, etc.

Live in the summer when it's summer.
Prepare YES ...  but celebrate the NOW.

What do we do About Religion?

A reader asked:

What if two parents have different religious backgrounds -- how can they agree to raise their child under one spiritual umbrella?

This is the number one question I am asked and there isn’t a one size fits all answer. Parents of different religions worry about being unable to choose which of their faiths to gift upon their new baby. They might question their own religious upbringing or worry about the consequences of selecting husband’s religion over wife’s beliefs.

I would encourage interfaith couples to first and foremost remember that spiritual nurturing takes place every day of the week – not just Saturday during temple or Sunday at church. It is the ins and outs of the tummy bugs, the tantrums, the report cards, and the snow days that we can create a soulful home.

As a couple it's a great idea to take the time to come up with a list of family beliefs.  Make a list that begins: We believe in….

Start from there. Together work out the religion question, without ever losing sight of the importance of family spirit day to day. Begin focusing on the 10 Principles listed in my book "10 Principles for Spiritual Parenting" and the faith factor will fall into place.

Kids and Nature

30326050

"Being out in nature got me through the awkward teenage years. I chose to be close to trees and plants rather than the always shifting social realm. I did sports and excelled in academics but, finding myself, my true self, was always in nature."

--Matt, Age 33

"When I read Tuck Everlasting I finally got the 'circle of life' thing. One of the characters says 'You can’t have living if you don’t have dying.'"

--Ellen, Age 13

Make sure that your month of July has lots of room for connecting with nature.  How often our summers become an extension of the school year in shorts and than poof...it's gone.

Make an effort to extend bedtimes so your kids can run in the twilight, look for stars, twirl on the front yard.  Make an effort to drive to the watering hole at sundown or the sun rise...

Make an effort to grab some summer breezes and a chance for your child to play in nature -- no strings attached.

I've written more about the importance of our children's connections with nature in my monthly newsletter.

What does your family do in the summers to foster a deeper love of mother earth?

More Simple Festive Summer Meals

3223525thl_2 It’s summertime and the living should be easier – at least in the kitchen.  Nature gives us everything we need to create simple, luscious, healthy meals -- it’s up to us to slow down long enough to enjoy the bounty.  With extended daylight hours, and no need to nag our children about homework, dinnertime can take on a whole new tone.

Shake things up a little bit this summer and have fun with these simple dinner ideas.  Even the pickiest eaters will be won over.

*Picasso in the Kitchen

Allow the vivid colors of summer fruits to become your palette.  Grab a large white plate or pretty tray and arrange slices of watermelon, kiwi, peaches, mango, grapes, and strawberries.  This beautiful arrangement can become your table’s centerpiece. Add a few bowls of various yogurts around the table and your hungry brood can dip to their delight.  Warm a loaf of crispy French bread, wrap it in a festive cloth and add it to the table.  Arrange some sliced cheeses and smoked or roasted turkey slices (pick these up at the deli counter) and you’ve got an easy does it, display that’s good enough to eat.

*Participation is Key

Less structured summer days give kids the opportunity to join in meal prep.  When kids cut the carrots chances are they will eat the carrots.  You might even assign your older kids a specific night to select and prepare the menu -- with you as their sous chef.  Offer them a few ideas such as “breakfast for dinner” or “mac and cheese night.”  The new social networking site for moms, MomJunction.com, recently posted an easy, tried and true mac and cheese recipe:

Boil 8 oz. small pasta. Drain, then stir in 1 cup milk, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar OR 8 oz. American cheese, salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle more cheese on top. Bake at 350˙ until heated through. Easy and yummy and plain!!!

You will want to help with boiling the pasta but other than that it’s a cinch for kids about 8 years and older.  To make this recipe even healthier, throw some peas (frozen or fresh) into the boiling pasta for the last few minutes of cooking time.

*Picnics Inside

Even if it’s raining outside think “picnic.”  Who said a picnic needs to be under the sky?  Pitch a pup tent in the living room or use paper plates in the dining room – the idea is simplicity and a lighthearted approach to mealtime.  Buy a precooked roasted chicken from your local supermarket.  You can often find organic, barbecued, or even provincial chickens for under $10.00.  Assemble a large salad from the salad bar or buy a Caesar salad in a bag.  Finally, pick up a container of vanilla frozen yogurt and some chocolate chip cookies.  When you get home all you’ll need to do is cut up the chicken, add it to the Caesar salad and scoop some frozen yogurt between 2 cookies, wrap them in cellophane and freeze for dessert.

*Partner Up

Create a weekly summer pot luck dinner gathering with neighbors.  Hearkening back to those beach days where everyone contributed to joint family dinners, enlist your neighbors to join you in creating the ultimate summer easy potluck, one night a week.  Your kids will love the cooperative feel where gathering together is what counts.  Get out a picnic bench, paper tablecloths, and come up with simple contributions from participating families.

*Protein Power

The combination of fat, protein and fiber in peanut butter makes it hard to break down, so it lasts longer in our systems – providing us more energy.  A perfect, protein packed, summer dinner kids adore is Spicy Peanut Noodles.  It’s served chilled or at room temperature so this is a great dish to make in the morning before the day begins.  Edamame is also packed with protein punch and would make a great accompaniment to these noodles.  You can buy them in the freezer section of your local grocer for ultimate ease.

Spicy Peanut Noodles

Whisk together:

-4 Tablespoons each creamy peanut butter (organic if available) and low-sodium soy sauce

-4 teaspoons fresh lime juice and a pinch of red pepper flakes

Toss with:

-4 Cups of cooked pasta (spaghetti holds the sauce well)

-A seeded, sliced cucumber

-Top with a few sliced scallions

Options:

-Grated ginger and/or garlic

-Chopped fresh cilantro

Summer Dinners

3178135thl I love easy, fast, fresh, delicious summer dinners.  Nothing signals summer more than beautiful ears of corn!  AND the last few years I discovered a new way to prepare corn that thrills my entire family...well..."thrills" is a pretty strong description of what that corn does...but you get the idea.

So here's what I do:

-Cut the kernels off the ears

-Saute the corn with a bit of butter and some snipped chives

-Add salt and pepper and quickly saute for a few minutes

THAT'S IT...easy and no corn silk between your teeth!  I made this the other night with sliced tomatoes quickly broiled with pesto and a slice of cheddar cheese on top...Some veggie humus and chips and that was dinner!

What's your favorite summer recipe?

Get Rid of Guilt

GUILT...

I've heard from so many of you since the last post about struggling daily with guilt...We truly beat ourselves up for "not getting it all done."  And yet, it's not possible to have perfection -- or some magazine's definition of perfection -- on a daily basis.

If you find yourself feeling guilty for not being a perfect mom...use the guilt to push you into positive action or come up with strategies to let it go.  A long hot bath, a run, venting with a friend, a glass of wine...whatever it takes to drop the smothering sensation of guilt is good.

What I mean about guilt as a good thing is when we use it to make shifts in our lives that serve us.  For instance if we are guilty over not attending to the the pile of papers that we need to go through in order to get our taxes done...schedule the 1/2 hour to tend to them.  Guilt Gone!

Don't allow negative emotions to zap your energy for being fully present.  We get the gift of today and let's flourish in that rather than feeling badly over our failings.

What works to help you banish guilt?

What Moms Want

Mommy_and_babiesI had the pleasure of visiting the Middlesex County Mom Meetup Group this morning.  There are 119 members of this group of moms and babies who met on line and gather in a free basement room of a community library every week.

When my girls were babies we had to post pieces of paper with rip off phone numbers on the local video store bulletin board or coffee shop kiosk in order to meet other like-minded moms.  Now, moms have such incredible access to one another both on line and then in real time as a result of meeting on line.

I was struck with the fact that what moms most want hasn't changed much.  This morning moms told me that the big issues for them were:

*Guilt...
Feeling guilt over SO much from their choices about pre/school or no preschool to what gets done in a day

*Saying No...
Moms are still having a hard time saying no to all the requests for their time

*Finding balance...
Finding sanity and balance between all the opportunities to join up, sign up, take part in...AND this is before their kids hit school age...

*Finding advice...

With so much parenting advice so available via books and on line these moms struggle with how to cut through the noise and find good advice and reliable experts.

No Alpha Moms...

One thing that has seemed to change  is that this group of moms, for the most part, was very vocal about their choices to trade time for money.  They were all in a flexible work situation or no work outside the home and their husbands/partners made their career choices around time with their family versus a job that might net more $$$$$...

What do you struggle with as a mom and what choices are you making as a family?

May I reach my highest and best Divine potential as a mom.
May I remain compassionate and mindful without losing my self.
May I craft a life of loving and supporting my child without pressuring or controlling.
May I overcome my limitations and fears so that I envelop and support wonder and magic in my household.
May I empower my child with love.
May I feel that circle of love wrap back around me and lift my spirit.

Telephone Turmoil

3186811thl I wish I was a cheery as this woman while on the telephone!  The truth is I'm beyond frustrated.  I needed to make a simple doctor's appointment for my daughter, an annual physical.  I timed it...start to finish the entire process took 45 minutes.  No kidding.  The doctor's phone number had been changed as her practice named changed...no luck in yellow pages.com...finally I tracked her down via the hospital she is affiliated with.  Then there is the 6 steps one has to go through on the automated phone system...arggggggggggg....holding for 10 minutes after that complicated set of maneuvers....a real person finally arrives....only to tell me "she's not in our system so you will have to call and preregister her with the hospital before setting up an appointment."  Yup, another 10 minutes to get through that ordeal...and you don't want to even hear the rest...THEN I shuddered to pick up the phone again to make an appointment for our cat at the vet....timed that one...on hold for 5 minutes....

These ordinary logistics of running a home and family can literally eat into our precious and limited time...What works for you?  I'm trying to reserve one morning a week to deal with all these sorts of things.  I still have to call the Ford dealership to schedule maintenance for the car, dentist for appointments for the girls and for me, pick up 4 dozen bagels for my daughter's crew race Saturday and of course my Costco membership has expired so ....  shall we figure in an extra 20 minutes to stand in line and renew that...

How do you get beyond discouraged at the time vampires sucking us dry when we try to arrange routine services.  I try to breathe deeply during the wait...drink a cold bottle of water...have my laptop open when on hold and do a bit of work...

Please share your:  Telephone Turmoil Tactics...I gotta go make a call...

May Day

3221477thl Happy May Day.

When I was growing up we called May 1st "May Day" and ran around from house to house depositing secret bouquets of May flowers on neighbor's doorsteps.  There was the exhiliration of ringing the doorbell then running away to watch as they discovered the basket of blossoms!

May unexpected delight fall upon your doorstep in some way today!  This...May Day 2007!
